Douglas Adams' Rules for Technology
- aftergibson 2y ago"We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas; but Maine and Texas, it may be, have nothing important to communicate."
- spacecadet 2y agoFrom Maine, hate Texas. 100% agree.
- gmatejka 2y agoThis comment is inappropriate and unnecessary. Additionally, shows you do not understand what this quote is saying.
- spacecadet 2y agoIt was a joke.
- smitty1e 2y agoHN generally frowns upon jacking about, even when The Famous Article itself is humorous, as in this case.
- spacecadet 2y agoOh I know, I run into this often. Wont stop me- someone at the top can ban me if they want to badly enough. One user took so much offense to a simple crack, that they spent weeks replying my thread, while I continued to crack on with them. So weird, like problematic weird.
- spacecadet 2y agoRules were meant to be broken, I love Adams- but I know plenty of old heads who never allowed Rule 3 to apply.
- woleium 2y ago“Rules were made for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men” Its an old quote, i guess it should be people at the end to be correct these days.

- xnx 2y agoI like Douglas Adams, and often consider these rules, but I try not to be limited by any of them. 1. Radio, airplanes, and the transistor (just to start with) are all mind-boggling magic 2. Bitcoin and Web3 are the most over-hyped nothing burgers I can think of 3. Electric cars, Beyond Burgers, and TikTok are great
- slowmovintarget 2y agoFor you third item... Beyond Burgers and TikTok are both actively harmful. The first to your physical health, the second to your mental health. (Tasty or entertaining does not greatness make... 'but that's, just, like, my opinion man.') Electric cars have significant drawbacks, but we'll figure those out over time. It took more than 100 years for ICE cars to get as good as they are. Edit: Heh... Beyond Burgers and TikTok were both invented after I was 35. Electric cars have been around much longer.
