Another option is to get city carshare, zipcar, or any other car sharing service. I'm in SF, and I'm thinking about doing that myself -- I get to use a car when I want to, and it'll be less money than if I owned a car (which incurs insurance, maintenance, gas costs etc). I ride my bike to work, so the only activity my car get is moving from one side of the street to the other.
