One of the very nice things about working in academia is that I now have a private office. It has been a huge productivity and quality of (work)life boost. I don't understand why tech companies continue with open plan offices when they know their workers dislike them and have known this for years (decades?). Having a low stress reverse commute on 280, one of the bay area's most scenic highways, probably also helps.
