The water takes away (into the toilet bowl) all the soil if done right, and the small toilet paper is mostly just for drying. But you’re still using the toilet paper. Maybe there is a body type / layout difference? It feels incredibly straightforward to me but reading the comments you are definitely not alone. My suggestion would be to just try it a couple of times.
