Host here. The actual fees that Airbnb charges are not really the issue:
- Part of the issue here is for "passive" hosts. If you own a property and hand it off to a management company or hire a cleaning service - they are going to eat all of your revenue. If you have an ADU or property next door that you can clean yourself, you get to keep all of the upsides.
- The actual app is bug-ridden and terribly designed. Airbnb support is abysmal and inhumane - they will try to screw you and your guests over at any opportunity and directly lie to get you off of the phone. Ostensibly, your fees go towards Airbnb acting as an intermediary, but they are not even good at the basics of the service they provide.
- Supposedly, when you host on Airbnb, they promise to cover all guest damages. With all the hoops in place it's basically impossible to get money out of them.
Other than bringing us guests, Airbnb itself provides absolutely no value.
