International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
- PaulHoule 2y agoTeams work on problems like this file:///C:/Users/ph18/Downloads/2023_eng.pdf ? How long do they have to do it? I'd imagine it would take careful editing and also most people would need some commentary (get some superstar like Terence Tao?) The best thing I can picture would be something similar to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell%27s_Kitchen_(American_TV_series) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell%27s_Kitchen_(American_TV_...
- turtleyacht 2y agoThat would be interesting to get a live stream of a mathematician looking over the teams' work on the problems. We could listen to a stream of thoughts on the thinking behind the problem and the team's tactics. As each answer gets submitted by all teams, users with browsers could explore interactive simulations or read historical references.
- PaulHoule 2y agoI'm not sure if it works on a livestream even though everybody and her sister wants to livestream these days. A soccer game is 90 minutes of action with people running the whole time, you don't have to edit it down to make something people want to watch. A math Olympiad with many teams is going to seem slow at time even if you know a lot of math. My take is that people respond to emotions and could relate to the ups and downs of people solving math problems even if they can't follow some or any of the math. I like Gordon Ramsay's cooking shows because they use techniques that would apply to making anything that people do interesting but he's got the advantage that everybody appreciates food and knows something about cooking. Of course you want to get interviews with individuals and the teams to mix in to establish their personalities and motivations, etc.
