Sandwhich shop is just a layer on top of the Grocers, and they charge 100-200% more. So, why do people pay for it when they can use the Grocers directly?

- ozgrakkurt 2y agoIn infra case there is ton of marketing and momentum pushing people to not do their own. Sandwich case is not really similar in this aspect imo, generally it is more of a bragging point to make your own healthy sandwiches. For example renting bunch of bare metal machines and running rke kubernetes implementation is orders of magnitude cheaper compared to using aws kubernetes, food has very low margins comparatively.
- madeofpalk 2y agoI have to buy a whole roast chicken just to make one sandwich, and I don't have a sandwich press at home so now I've got to spend $30 on one of them too.
- kikimora 2y agoI don’t see how bare metal is order of magnitude cheaper. ECS + EC2 would be 2x maybe 3x more expensive than bare metal. Add auto-scaling and tooling (VPC, CF, terraform, Systems Manager, etc) and difference can be zero if not negative.
- ozgrakkurt 2y agoWe have a kubernetes cluster running on bare metal machines and comparing price with aws it is at least 30x. I’m not including engineering time that is spent on maintaining it but it is still cheaper by a lot for sure.
