Ask HN: Why Crowdstrike posts no rank more better
Honest question. I've never wondered too much about ranking on the front page. Not mad, just curious. There have been multiple posts about today's outage with hundreds more votes than posts ranking above them.
- talldayo 2y agoIsn't it currently the #1 thread on the frontpage? I don't see why we need more posts than that.
- rfarley04 2y agoYea. One is more than enough but a few have cycled through. When I write this just 5 minutes ago, this one (150pts) ranked first: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41005181 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41005181 While the current top ranking Crowdstrike post was in second with 1700pts. Happened with other updates and explainers earlier in the day.
- r721 2y agoSome users are flagging them as duplicates apparently, and that negatively affects ranking: >Although submissions cannot be downvoted, flags act as a "super" downvote and enough flags will strongly reduce the rank of the submission, or kill it entirely (flagging is supposed to be used for submissions which break the site guidelines, but that isn't always the case in practice). https://github.com/minimaxir/hacker-news-undocumented?tab=readme-ov-file#flaggingvouching https://github.com/minimaxir/hacker-news-undocumented?tab=re...
