Two different stories of the same event.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoThere are details in one piece that aren’t in the other. NY Post was more biographical, while TC was more venture and entrepreneurial career focused. Would’ve used a Wikipedia page as the root post, commenting with references, but no Wikipedia page.
- smcin 2y agoNeither of them try to explain why he might have had a reason to commit suicide: mightn't have been Fandango itself, which is what a casual read of the headline might suggest - he sold Fandango in 2007 and exited it back in 2011. Was it his current portfolio companies? The market outlook in general? Something personal? Mental health/depression? Not his recent gallbladder surgery. His note doesn't clarify.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoAs media outlets, it would not be in good taste and respectful to him and his family to speculate on why he would commit suicide or the contents of the note he left.
- smcin 2y agoI didn't call for "speculation", I said the articles did a poor journalistic job of presenting relevant facts that might be informative: a) he stopped being in control of Fandango 17 years ago already (yet a casual read of the headline would suggest otherwise (the article body nowhere says "former founder" or "acquired 17 years ago..."), and the body of the article never contradicts the inference) b) his investing activities since then involved several other companies and sectors, less prominently mentioned in the article than Fandango. (Which were his main portfolio companies currently? What was going on with them? Obvious questions.) Here's a link with some of that information: https://www.crunchbase.com/person/j-michael-cline https://www.crunchbase.com/person/j-michael-cline And here's another article that did report more on his post-Fandango background: https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/j-michael-cline-fandango-greenwich-ct-nyc-hotel-19582386.php https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/j-michael-cline-fanda... And the TC article closes with this confusing sentence "Accretive, Juxtapose and Fandango did not immediately respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment.", which blurs that he wasn't at Fandango for over a decade. Comcast (who acquired Fandango) haven't commented either, but mentioning that wouldn't be that relevant either.
