This is one company (Luxottica, not Meta) that I cannot for the life of me figure out why the FTC/DOJ haven't been constantly trying to break up. It very clearly is a hugely dominant monopoly with significant pricing power over consumers
- SavageBeast 2y ago"Americans are being gouged by the fashion eyewear MONOPOLY" said Attorney General Merrick B. Garland today... With all the things going on in the country, overpricing frivolous designer eyewear seems pretty safe from attack. They're clearly doing just exactly this too as I sit here in my $250 worth of Ray Ban plastic as I type this.
- quantified 2y agoNot just frivolous designer eyewear. Massively inflates the pricing of a lot of pedestrian eyewear too. Clever monopoly, most people like having eyesight.
- pwg 2y ago> that I cannot for the life of me figure out why the FTC/DOJ haven't been constantly trying to break up Because Luxottica is not a US company, they are an Italian company based in Milan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxottica https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luxottica) which puts them out of direct reach of the US FTC/DOJ.
