ASK HN: Got scammed, how to check the scammer etc.
Someone approached my on Skype and via Gmail, positioning himself as an US military general and after personal stuff told he's in Syria in the US Army at some camp on some mission, can't use phone and money (but they connive and still use phones intermittently) and needs someone "trusted" to receive some gold he was holding at some South African company, as the company was closing its headquarters. As I was bored with my current job, planning for a startup and searching a co-founder and I was chatting with him to procrastinate time. The company required some fees to prepare that gold for shipping. So I paid ~250$ in 2 installments via Binance (Company’s Binance ID: 531490280, it was in Ghana).
I gave him my address and phone number, and email address. Now he wants +620$ for package ownership name change etc. I checked the images of gold he sent via Skype, they matched exactly the ones present at LinkedIn profiles of some african gold selling companies. The personal photos he sent didn't have exact matches on google's reverse image check, except for one, which matched 95% the photo of that US general he is masking himself onto.
The IP he uses to send Gmail emails is 209.85.220.41, and it was listed in some databases as malicious. His Skype is live:.cid.35b9237547aedf2. The Skype IPs I see from my linux terminal
13.107.246.67:443
40.74.219.49:443
52.97.201.98:443
20.42.65.94:443
52.182.143.210
are also listed in some databases as malicious.
He says he's using Windows.
So far, I told, that I will receive soon more money and will transfer it to him. He seems to respond. What can I do (to also save myself time preferentially)? Can I return my last money I paid on binance? Can someone check him?
- LinuxBender 2y agoThat is a scammer. You are out some money. Stop communicating with them or they will get more money out of you. Others would have to chime in if there is a way to get your money back from Binance but I would not get my hopes up. The IP's are Azure. Scammers use public clouds with fake ID's and proxies. It's and endless game of whack-a-mole for companies like Microsoft and Amazon.
