JD Vance Wants to Make Silicon Valley Great Again
- Terr_ 2y ago> Vice presidents have a history of being shunted to the background, and there’s every chance that Trump will do that to his 39-year-old running mate. The deciding factor will be how much Vance is willing to act as an unequivocal Trump cheerleader/sockpuppet on TV. Mike Pence wasn't interested in doing that.
- rayiner 2y agoPence was a Bush/Cheney Republican who had major disagreements with Trump. Vance is a populist like Trump.
- Terr_ 2y agoWhy do you believe policy is the determining factor? I find myself thinking of a Lord of the Rings quote, where Gandalf is warning Saruman... "There is only one Demagogue of the MAGA, only one who can bullshit it to his ego. And he does not share limelight."
- MaxHoppersGhost 2y agoHe has already committed to doing that by going from a never Trumper in 2016 (he called him America’s Hitler) to bending the knee to get his endorsement for his senate run just a few years later. Guy is just another power hungry jerk.
- Terr_ 2y ago> He has already committed to doing that I think you're confusing "Pence compromised his principles in various ways" with "Pence spent his VP term going on talk-shows to say all the things Trump likes to put into other people's mouths." They're related, but the first does not prove the second.
- ggm 2y agoTech leadership is going to sing loud about taxes and liberalisation of VC friendly economics and environment, but the reality is whatever Silicon Valley has, you can't bottle it. Every attempt in Europe, Asia to replicate it has failed. Vance should be careful he doesn't destroy the thing he loves. I don't often believe my own bullshit, but I do believe Jobs, Musk, Andreesen-Horowitz, Zuck do NOT define what made Silicon Valley work. They're the robber barons of our age, not the actual innovators. (Jobs maybe I say that unfairly)
- austin-cheney 2y ago> but the reality is whatever Silicon Valley has, you can't bottle it. Financing, escalating rounds of investment betting on market penetration without regard for profit. Nobody else is willing to wait up to a decade funding companies with increasing orders of magnitude of money every two years if they don’t make money.
- acchow 2y agoIt’s more than that, because the VC money willing to put up with such long delays for payout can certainly invest in companies anywhere in the world.
