Yea almost all these places are at extinction level disaster birth rates.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoThere are 8 billion people in the world, on track for 10 billion by 2100. A gradual decline towards ~4 billion people over the next ~150 years is not extinction. https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/jul/11/global-population-predictions-offer-hopeful-sign-for-planet-un-says https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/... https://www.un.org/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2024_wpp_2024_advance_unedited_0.pdf https://www.un.org/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.deve...
- jojobas 2y agoNearly all of that growth is in sub-saharan Africa and Afghanistan. An extinction in Europe is still an extinction.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoEurope will have less people, but no extinction. https://www.euronews.com/next/2023/04/04/china-sees-first-population-decline-in-six-decades-where-does-the-eu-stand https://www.euronews.com/next/2023/04/04/china-sees-first-po...
- jojobas 2y agoEurope won't have fewer people, but there will be an extinction of Europeans. Maybe not in our lifetime but it is now all but inevitable.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoOn a long enough timeline, we're all dead.
- jononor 2y agoIn that future, those will _be_ the Europeans :) While heritage is important, culture is predominantly made up by the living. So if something is important to preserve, pass it on to the next generations (and not just your own children).
- immibis 2y agoWhy do you think there won't be any more people in Europe?
- lazyasciiart 2y agoPresumably Europe is working on robots that can enforce their immigration policies long after the population behind the policies is gone?
- immibis 2y agoTo my knowledge, if there were no people in Europe, there would be nobody to sink the boats full of 500 children - not even robots.
- lazyasciiart 2y agoWhy would that follow? Are you defining robots as people?
- immibis 2y agoGP is
- jojobas 2y agoThere sure will be people. However, there's no arguing that Goths, Picts and Aztecs are extinct.
- pharrington 2y agoAre you confusing culture with the people who have that culture?
- piva00 2y agoGoths aren't extinct, they were from southern Scandinavia and their descendants are Scandinavian people. Aztecs became the Nahua people in Mexico, there are millions of them so not extinct. I'm not well versed in Celtic people but I guess it's the same as the Goths and Aztecs, their descendants live today in Scotland/UK/Ireland/wherever they moved.
- CalRobert 2y agoHow so?
- Gibbon1 2y agoThere is the asymmetry between up and down when you're talking exponential's. Up gets steeper and steeper until something happens. We probably don't want to find out what. The way down has a very long tail. Japan's population at this rate will decline to 50 million over a 100 years. A lot can happen in 100 years. And it's not clear that the current trend will continue. I'm sure people on the tip top of the wealth/population pyramid are freaking out that the thing will start getting smaller. I'm dubious there is a net negative for the people on the bottom. Right now rents have been gamed up, labor power is weak. A falling population will reverse that.
