The point is there isn't an alternative and using imagination isn't going to magically make that possible. If you are 200 yards away, a gun is probably the only way to stop someone in any way. Pepper spray, tasers, etc... none of that works from a distance that most guns can be fired at. Tear gas or other crowd control will not stop someone from taking a shot. If you're suggesting creating something new, then sure, but even then I would assume most things have been tried already. Nothing stops a gun from a distance except another gun.
