- throwaway5752 2y agoThis is the source headline, but from their own article Cigarettes have long been a cause of cancer, and remained in the top spot — about 19% of cancer cases included were attributable to smoking. Excess body weight was deemed a cause for about 7.6% of cases, including malignancies of the gallbladder, esophagus, liver and kidneys. Related: By the numbers: America’s alcohol-related health problems are rising fast Alcohol came in third, with 5% of cases in men and women over 30 attributable to drinking This is the actual source: https://acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.3322/caac.21858 https://acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.3322... Further, The proportion of all cancers attributable to dietary factors ranged from 0.3% for low dietary calcium consumption to 1.4% for low fruit and vegetable consumption (Figure 1). By cancer type, the proportion of colorectal cancer cases attributable to dietary factors ranged from 4.2% (6090 cases) for low dietary calcium, to 7.3% (10,610) for red meat, to 10.5% (15,150) for low dietary fiber, and to 12.8% (18,540) for processed meat consumption The study seems to indicate UV light exposure (not wearing sunscreen) as a very large preventable factor, too.
- mensetmanusman 2y agoI can’t recommend enough the effect of adding psyllium husk to a diet. The fiber boost dramatically improved my gut health. (And low fiber is a leading cause as listed).

- mensetmanusman 2y agoCounter with selenium from fish.
- more_corn 2y agoSame. But I quit drinking too.
- alan-hn 2y agoWhy not just eat a bunch of fruit and veg
- mensetmanusman 2y agoI did that too, not sure why the extra husk was so effective.
- idontwantthis 2y agoHow do they attribute a cause of cancer to something like drinking small amounts of alcohol? How do you know that a person having 1 drink per day is the reason they got cancer?
- bognition 2y agoThey don't. What they can do is observe cancer rates in populations that have 1 drink per day and compare that to rates of cancer in other populations. There are a bunch of statistical tools you can use to try to identify and correct for other confounding variables.
- TeaBrain 2y agoOne of the cited links references such a study. They found no reduction in risk for those who ceased drinking who were previously only drinking one drink per day, while there was a reduction in risk for those who ceased drinking who had been drinking three or more drinks per day. https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMsr2306723 https://www.nejm.org/doi/10.1056/NEJMsr2306723
