That site is difficult to read. I try to understand what hive plots are, but it's giving me an actual headache trying to read the text It looks like they're river/sankey plots, circularized, with node clusters at each layer. If so, then there really are better ways to represent this than a hive plot: a river plot assuming time-series, or a circos plot assuming not. Barring that, tSNE and UMAP are decent projections for complex data and can easily convert any kNN graph into one.
