Identity: Self-Hosted or in the Cloud?

- hamandcheese 2y agoDoes anyone have any tips for a super simple self-hosted LDAP server for a homelab? Every time I look I only find options which seem way too complicated. What I really want is a simple binary that can read users and hashed passwords from, say, a SQLite table, and expose enough LDAP to integrate with other tools that speak it.
- kalidev 2y agoHave you tried lldap? https://github.com/lldap/lldap https://github.com/lldap/lldap
- hamandcheese 2y agoI haven't, but it looks perfect for my use case!
- anotherhue 2y agoKeycloak is definitely not small but you might find that you can ignore enough of the functionality to pretend that it is. https://github.com/keycloak/keycloak https://github.com/keycloak/keycloak
- az09mugen 2y agoLess known and less complete, but simpler and lighter than keycloak there is zitadel https://zitadel.com/ https://zitadel.com/ You can of course self host it.
- nonrandomstring 2y agoIdentity isn't mentioned so much as the relative practicalities and economics of "cloud" versus "self-hosted" (on prem, distributed?). Maybe "where to put identity" is too flat a question. Identity is one part of modern authentication, one part of a trust model that includes roles, history, capability, reputation, origin, routes, proofs and much more before authorisation. Does that go in a place?
