If one claims that there must be something that transcends the material world, then this does not necessarily follow. Currently we have no idea how the material universe came into existence, nor do we know the details of how life came from non-life, nor do we know where conscientiousness emerged from. Therefore, the inevitability of AGI is not a foregone conclusion.

If you quantize the measure of my worth to manipulating text, you might get close. But that's like restricting the solutions of the Kobiyashi Maru to only verbal commands.
