This kind of tactical suppression of news happened a lot in the run-up to the UK's Brexit referendum. The EU is a very polarising institution. Unfortunately, loyal supporters of the EU will do anything to protect it from criticism. Which is one of the reasons it has become such an awful, yet powerful, political experiment. We're not able to openly criticise it. (watch as my comment gets downvoted / flagged!)
