Germany shutting down nuclear power plants was truly idiotic move.
If you make the decision to phase out nuclear power, OK. But at least wait until something that is not hydrocarbons is in it's place and running.
wind+solar does not work.
wind+solar+energy_storage can work. It's not there yet.
Germany is buring brown coal, hard coal and natural gas.
- wpel 2y agowind+solar+energy_storage is getting there, but requires lots of investment by Germany. Unfortunately, as you can hear from the video, investing into the future is not something Germany is doing lately.
- cocodill 2y agoMerkel ruined the land.
- throwawayqqq11 2y ago> wind+solar does not work. Strong claim, since the nuclear plants are already shut down and yet the lights are on. - nabla9 2y agoGerman Net Power Generation in First Half of 2024 35.0% of energy from fossil fuels. More than half of that could have been replaced by nuclear energy by not shutting down power plants. https://www.ise.fraunhofer.de/en/press-media/press-releases/2024/german-net-power-generation-in-first-half-2024-record-generation-of-green-power-generation-from-fossil-fuels-continues-decline.html https://www.ise.fraunhofer.de/en/press-media/press-releases/...
- roenxi 2y agoGermany's energy (overall and electric power) production has been knocked back to 1970s levels [0]. If that is working, failure is unimaginably bad. The trend is grim. China, on the other hand, has built a new US sized economy over the same timeframe that looks very similar to the German situation on a per-capita basis. I'd rather live in a country that was doing similar things with energy. The trend is rosy. [0] https://ourworldindata.org/energy/country/germany https://ourworldindata.org/energy/country/germany
- pestatije 2y agoodd because Merkel knows a thing or two about nuclear, doesnt she?
- roenxi 2y agoEh. A leader's personal characteristics have an important but surprisingly small impact on the thing led. There are a lot of examples of that (quite a high profile one playing out around the US president right now, for example). My usual go-to is in Australia there was a politician who literally wrote a book recommending against the policies he adopted while in power. There wasn't any evidence that he'd changed his intellectual views, he was just blown by a stronger wind than his convictions.
- 486sx33 2y agoOdd that Angela Merkel was born in West Germany but her family moved to East Germany when she was an infant (I guess on PURPOSE?) talk about the wrong move of a lifetime. Anyway a little history “Merkel was elected to the Bundestag for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. As the protégée of chancellor Helmut Kohl, Merkel was appointed as Minister for Women and Youth in 1991, later becoming Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety in 1994.” I would hope she knew a thing or two about nuclear
