Microsoft is constructing a mammoth data center at an inflation-adjusted cost comparable to the Apollo Program.
We already know AGI is possible with 20 watts. It's only a matter of time before it is created on another medium.
- hi-v-rocknroll 2y agoDoesn't matter. Meta and Microsoft are both doing stupid corporate shit. It's a total waste of resources and entropy. It's the equivalent of a nerd pissing contest. AGI doesn't apply to biological systems because it's not artificial by definition. You're falling into their fallacy that simulating neurons is going to be efficient in another form. Science has thus far shown it's very expensive and difficult when a neuron would be the simplest and best solution.
- HeatrayEnjoyer 2y agoArtificial or not is immaterial. The intelligence is real. You don't think there are better mediums than fatty tissue and proteins? Human brains are anything but optional
- rsynnott 2y agoI mean, "Microsoft is spending a lot of money on a thing" is not, historically, anything close to a guarantee that the thing will come to pass. Nearly all of their megaprojects after Windows NT in the 90s have, essentially, failed; I think the only counterexamples would be Xbox and Azure (maybe Surface and Bing, if you want to be _very_ charitable in your definition of success).
