I've long since left school but I'm pretty certain that if I'd had a smartphone at school it would have been a disruptive distraction. Even leaving aside social media (which I don't use) there are just too many interesting on the internet to hold my interest to ever get bored. I reckon even using a smartphone for school projects would be fraught with distractions, the futzing around just finding relevant info would be time-wasting.
