It may not always be practical for individuals to 3D print things like this, but consider the following:
There's more online services popping up for people to 3D print things on demand and have them shipped. Further, there's aggressive Chinese-based cloners that can take these projects and make them available for purchase on sites like aliexpress. It might seem like copying/stealing, but in a way that's in line with the ideals of FOSS --free to use and modify and anyone can sell a build. Since this is hardware, a build is much more meaningful than a simple compilation/linking into a binary.
I imagine if this dynamic grows further, we'll see clones popping up on regular retail sites like Amazon.
Will the contributors get royalties and such? No --but crucially, users and the community will be able to treat the product as fully FOSS.
