George Carlin and the Truth About "Punching Down"
- zzo38computer 2y agoI had thought so too. Many people they say about "punch up" and "punch down" comedy, but I thought, to do comedy, to be funny, you will say anything if it is sufficiently funny, not "up" and not "down". Like this article says: If you are doing comedy, your allegience should not be left and right and up and down. Your allegience should be funny. Comedy is you punch everyone (including yourself) (but not usually by hand like real punching; it isn't physically fighting). Furthermore, free speech is good and important (whether or not it is funny). (Even the quotation (Rowan Atkinson) there says: "In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything." And, this is another free speech, and is also good.) > To reduce power to one’s skin color, identity group, or bank balance, as American numbskulls so often do, is to view the night sky through a keyhole. Our inability or refusal to grapple with the true complexity of power is why we should treat the concept with humility, not absolute confidence. Of course, they are right. Power is not your skin colours and stuff like that; and, anyways, there is more than one "power", depending on the circumstances and other stuff.
