Vote for Democracy

- chiefalchemist 2y agoVoting !== Democracy A proper and healthy Democracy is more neuanced than voting. To dumb down Democracy to voting is ultimately undermining Democracy. For example, what about The Fourth Estate? Or, look at the USA. The two major parties have a stone cold duopoly. There was a "debate" last week. Look at the two products offered. Does either one look like the brands care about their customers? Or does it look like a cartel of two companies controlling the market and effectively saying, "These are our broken and pathetic products. You will buy one of them, and you will like it." That's not Democracy. Correct if I'm wrong but the turnout in the last POTUS election was record numbers. So how exactly has voting fixed and improved the American "democracy"?
- nonrandomstring 2y ago(producer here) You're absolutely right. Discussion of that is in the episode (which I hope you're enjoying :) I edited down almost 3 hours of very lively talk on folks like Horace Mann, and Aristotle's taxonomy on the stability of different sorts of assembly. What we ended up with is the more topical and amusing stuff... because 2024! And I really wanted to hear from someone with a different cultural perspective. Eastern Europe is already 'interesting', and the recent Indian election was a dry run for lots of "deep fake fears" that didn't materialise. > A proper and healthy Democracy A key phrase. Are our democracies healthy and proper? But what is practical? And what is practical in a particular epoch and culture? > Does either one look like the brands care about their customers? Or does it look like a cartel of two companies controlling the market In the show we talk about 'politics' as distinct from governance and democracy. In many ways what you are talking about is the show-business built atop actual civic process - a thing we mistake for democracy that is just profitable entertainment.
- chiefalchemist 2y agoShow biz" I prefer to call it the Politics Industrial Complex - which also includes the dysfunctional and deceptive media. The same entities and media that refuse to admit they're part of the problem. There is no Democracy without accountability.

- psychoslave 2y agoWhat is democracy for you? On my side, I would define it as a social structure that foster as many of its inhabitants, rising them as much as possible into well-balanced citizens able to work together harmoniously and efficiently at improving life of all people in its sphere of political influence. "Representative democracy" is thus an oxymoron thrown at the poor plebeians that oligocrates loves as they see in it as the perfect jail of "bread and circuses" mediocrity loop. Perfect also to praising their ridiculous centralized social monstrosity that will devour them just as well into never ending chain of frustrations. All that while convincing them of their all-powerfulness when measurably they are not able to canalize much thought out of their narrow box of greediness.
