Ask HN: What do you think about the new ICQ?
The service allows you to use old software, as it uses the Oscar protocol
to use it via Android - I had to repackage the old Java applet and adapt it
What do you think about this, and what software do you use?
- cpach 2y agoWait a minute, wasn’t ICQ shut down a few weeks ago? What have I missed?
- stop50 2y agoI heard the same
- Turboblack 2y agowe are talking about alternative servers, in this case about nina.chat
- throwaway211 2y agoIs this about https://nina.chat/ https://nina.chat/ ? I don't, and have a question: If it's reimplementing the protocol, how are old accounts verified? Is there a repository of password hashes that's been shared?
- Turboblack 2y agoyou can recreate your old number, but the contact list - no, there is a new database
- cookiengineer 2y agoPlease no. ICQ was as unsecure as any chat protocol can ever be. No encryption, plaintext, lots of bugs, HTML and XSS injection and other things, let alone RCEs that directly execute .exe files and were able to steal Browser/Trident engine cookies and active sessions on websites you visited. Please, just get over it and use jabber/pidgin and OTR encryption if you want oldskool chats.
