I dont think that is the full story, as my airpods didnt auto update when simply within range, as they werent connected to the device, so therefore no way to actually download the update. You need to connect to a device via bluetooth for 5 mins (e.g. just open case when close to device if it is configured to autoconnect). Then close the case and leave for 15 mins. Then connect again and check version.
