There's something about uppers that prevents a person from being vulnerable to viruses, I used to get sick like the flu once a year like clockwork when I lived in Florida, usually right when the cold season started.
I haven't had so much as a bad cough or runny nose, let alone get sick, since I moved to Oregon like 8 years ago (context clues.. lol). So I obviously haven't had Covid either, and I even have a bad nailbiting habit.
- mathgeek 2y agoCan you elaborate on what “uppers” means in your context? Upper latitudes, altitudes, stimulants, something else?
- j4k3z 2y agoAmphetamines, cocaine, etc..
- bravetraveler 2y agoIn the context of Florida is this really a question? I don't mean "haha Florida man" necessarily, either, but it's largely sea level and firmly southern US
- mathgeek 2y agoYes, because of the difference in legality for many controlled substances between the two states mentioned. From the poster’s reply elsewhere, the context was focusing on Oregon. > On February 1, 2021, Oregon became the first state in the USA to decriminalize the possession of small quantities of all illicit drugs, following the passing of Oregon Ballot Measure 110 in November 2020.
- bravetraveler 2y agoI guess you put more stock on legality over actions than I do, I dunno. Crime is illegal yet it persists. "It" seemed fairly obvious regarding location/climate/timing. While you were right to ask, my assumption was also right. I don't mean to belabor this; it was discernible in context.
- mathgeek 2y agoI’m not sure what you’re talking about so just to be clear: the OC specified it was the legal availability of drugs in Orgeon rather than anything to do with the climate or altitudes of Florida and Oregon. Hope that helps clear up your confusion.
- bravetraveler 2y ago> I’m not sure what you’re talking about I'll say it more bluntly, then. They were making a weird, stretched, assertion. Your question missed this/bought into it. Consider my first post a joke in poor medium/taste. Sarcasm doesn't translate well. They confirmed one of your theories (and the one I felt comfortable going with/dismissing) in another comment; vaguely - amphetamines/stimulants. My point is that it's none of the above. Viral things do better in 'the tropics' during viral seasons than broadly in the north. The drugs make one feel less of the debilitation. Truly ground breaking stuff. It's a true mystery how communicable diseases do better in favorable and populated/traveled environments. Or how self-prescribing OTC 'analogues' may achieve similar effects. To be clear: /s This is why I felt the question was silly. I hope that makes sense and clears up your confusion. I don't mean for this to be sour, or belabored... and yet. This thread is unfounded/on the wrong track from the outset. Avoidable with a little bit of internalization for all three - the other, you, and me.
- mathgeek 2y agoAh, I think I see now. I wasn't implying anything beyond asking if the original commenter could clarify their terminology.

- BjoernKW 2y agoQuite to the contrary, regular use of amphetamines impairs the immune response, which isn't all that surprising since chronic amphetamine consumption leads to increased stress levels.
