Kids and the desire to not be “proper”. Most of these originated from kids, teenagers, or even young adults, who want to do something fun. And what is “fun” is basically the opposite of what we (I’m including myself here because I was one of those) see everyday from our parents and schools: Monochrome documents with business-y fonts and layout. Geocities and the like were our chance to do something of our own that is very much away from that.
