Reno is right next to Lake Tahoe, a very popular outdoor recreation area, and the Tahoe National Forest. It's also just a couple hours from Yosemite. Salt Lake City also has fantastic wilderness nearby, and one of the best winter sports scenes in the nation. Perhaps in the world - they hosted the Olympics in 2002 and probably will again in 2034.
