Do you ever feel overwhelmed thinking about all of the suffering in the world?
- ttyprintk 2y agoSome put it in terms of feelings. I bet HN has a post about the actual underlying statistical distributions. At issue is whether suffering is declining due to our efforts. Pinker seems optimistic, and indeed it’s safer now than living memory. Taleb and Cirillo assume we’re in a low between extremes.
- cen4 2y agoThe cows are not encouraged to think about the factory farm they are on. The circus lion is not reminded its a lion. The killer whale is kept in a tank and a called a potentially dangerous terrorist. These are unnatural environments we have become very good at constructing. And then we end up using the same approach with people. The imagination and skill exists to reimagine all these environments. But it keeps getting directed towards other things.
