I've worked in both places. Zurich, at least to me, is very conservative. The nightlife is pretty dull. Munich is a whole lot more relaxed and fun.
They both have pedestrian area shopping, and excellent transit. And they're both great for food.
I don't know anything about living there, though. But if I was choosing, it would be Munich hands down. So much friendlier.
Zurich isn't just a little bit more expensive. I was pretty blown away at how much everything there costs.
- steve1977 2y agoZurich is one of the most expensive cities in the world.
- _zoltan_ 2y agogreat for food???? I've lived here more than a decade now but if you don't actually live in downtown or maybe Altstetten, then good luck food wise. Most restaurant are simply serve the same food which is boring after a while. In Budapest and London there's a lot more variety.
- sillyfluke 2y agoInteresting you find Zurich to be more conservative than Munich since Munich itself is known to be the more conservative of well-known German cities. Anecdote wise I found the Swiss from Zurich more open and party-friendly (for lack of a better term) than Germans from Munich. Not sure whether to dish up the lack of nightclubs in Zurich to conservatism.
- ksaj 2y agoYou've partly hit on why I think this way. In Zurich, you have to go to "the bad area" to see any form of nightlife whatsoever. It's in quotes, because I was warned not to go there because it is the bad area. It's also why I went there - the not-bad area was not-good unless you live a secluded life already. Mind you, Hells Angels were in town, but that at least made the club I ended up at interesting. Would have been incredibly dull otherwise. In Munich, you can find a party atmosphere pretty much at any time, and you don't have to go to "the bad area" to find it.
