- 999900000999 2y agoWill be really interesting to see if we ever get a focused effort to actually build more housing, or will homeless just keep going up. If you have tons of homeless camps that tend to expand every year, something is broken.
- practicemaths 2y agoIf you build more housing, especially more affordable, then housing prices start to go down and that makes banks and landowners unhappy.
- techostritch 2y agoMy best hope is this may actually encourage people to come up with better solutions; it feels like we've got into this stalemate where no one wants to fix the problem, and homeless camps are not great compromises.
- floxy 2y agoDoes anyone know why boarding houses went away? Where it seems like you rent a tiny room with a bed, but have a shared bathroom, shared dining area, etc.. It seems like they were widespread enough to make unremarked appearances in old movies from say the 1930's.
- 999900000999 2y agoYou have an absurd number of requirements for building a new apartment. It's starting to be reformed, but for years in LA you needed to build a parking space for each apartment. https://laist.com/news/housing-homelessness/los-angeles-parking-housing-apartment-development-street-ed1-affordable-transportation-cars https://laist.com/news/housing-homelessness/los-angeles-park... Most new apartments have these really ugly parking lots attached. It doesn't take a genius to say without the parking lots housing would be cheaper. Koreatown , and much of Downtown LA has older housing stock that's effectively grandfathered in. A long long time ago you could get an apartment for less that 600$. That's what ( if we inflation adjust it, I guess 900$ is reasonable) working class people can afford. In reality this tiny apartments are now around 1500$ or so Compare this to Chicago where you can get a 2Bdrm for 1400$. Split that with a roommate and you can make it on minimum wage. Plus you don't need a car, so you can ride public transportation for next to nothing. It's even cheaper if you qualify ( seniors, Medicare recipients). https://www.transitchicago.com/reduced-fare-programs/ https://www.transitchicago.com/reduced-fare-programs/ Boarding houses are coming back, mutated by venture capitalist to the point where your paying for the "co living" experience.
