Ask HN: Getting into a offensive cybersecurity role with limited experience?
As the title suggests, is it feasible to gain a role in offensive cybersecurity (such as pentesting, redteaming, etc) with limited background experience?
I've seen a few ads offering courses to train for cybersecurity but they all seem to be scams.
I'm aware, given said resources, i could upskill myself but I'm additionally curious in regards to whether any mentorships exist within this industry, apprenticeships do but they require qualifications.
I'm new here so i hope this is ok to ask.
Thankyou, Loki.
- achenet 2y agoyou should probably prefix your post title with "Ask HN:" as for your question, I don't have enough knowledge to help you. You can try emailing cybersecurity firms and seeing if they offer some sort of apprenticeship.
- LAB_Hornsby 2y agoThankyou. Yeah i keep look into apprenticeships but realistically as aforementioned i need qualifications which i don't have yet but if I'm to gain them i may aswell spend the effort to go straight into employment with a buisiness directly.
- GianFabien 2y agoSlightly off-topic. Why are you interested in working in this area? Do you have any software or hardware engineering experience? It's Ok to admit that money is an attraction.
- LAB_Hornsby 2y agoGood money yes, but i have engineering, game development, general programming, and audio analysis background. I figure though since these are all not very profitable, limited and don't bring as much enthusiasm as i once had to them that cybersecurity is a realistic role with goals i could strive towards with passion. Currently no work place i have found has allowed me to do so with good pay, job security and consistent work.
- LAB_Hornsby 2y agoAn apprenticeship (which i currently have in engineering) is partially contradictory to this statement don't get me wrong, but I'm not learning any new skills and there is not much work... Additionally, whilst i possess the correct mindset i believe it's no use in my current field... especially when it's just cleaning... etc etc the list goes on really.
