Show HN: Undupes, Find Duplicate Files
I am trying to see how I can go about finding duplicate files by leveraging what I understand of the Unix philosophy. j/f-dupes seem like great tools but I think I can reduce the amount of code needed for doing similar tasks by leveraging the philosophy of Unix. I have more ideas that can further simplify the software, but this seemed like something I could share. Feedback welcome! Cheers!
- bhaney 2y agoTypically I want to know about duplicate files in order to save space, but I don't necessarily want to delete a duplicate file entirely in case there's something referencing it over the other file it's a duplicate of. Seems like it would be more useful if it could turn duplicates into hardlinks/softlinks/snapshots instead of deleting them, so I could get all the space savings without having to worry about things breaking. As-is, it's only really good for organizational/clutter reasons on data that isn't referenced, rather than general purpose space-savings.
- m-chaturvedi 2y agoThanks a lot for the input! As of now, it can just output the sets of files in json format that can be used by another program if one doesn't want to delete anything.
