It's cool, they don't want my money so they won't get it. I'll keep getting their stuff from Usenet for free.

- flyinRyan 14y agoThe issue is, to get the few hundred you would offer, they would have to give up the millions that the cable companies offer. The last time I looked, if every single person who pirated HBO shows were to pay per episode (wouldn't happen, many would still pirate) it still wouldn't be as much as what they get from cable now.
- jsprinkles 14y agoYou're assuming, incorrectly, that cable would dump them as soon as they offered a Web option.
- flyinRyan 14y agoNo, I'm assuming Cable has in their contract that HBO isn't allowed to do this for a reason.
- jsprinkles 14y agoAt this point HBO is a favor for the cable company, not vice versa. Comcast's business would plummet if Comcast suddenly no longer had HBO, and Comcast probably knows it.
- tokenizer 14y agoBut that's not looking at any cable subscriber. I'm sure many people get cable exclusively for HBO shows. It's all a matter of when. They'll need to see some good numbers before they start providing their own channel for their content on the internet.
- bgentry 14y agoNo, my few hundred does not "lose them millions". Their relationship with cable companies is very profitable for both sides, and I find it unlikely that the cable companies would want to simply end it outright. Also, in addition to a few hundred from me per year, they would be getting a few hundred from hundreds of thousands of other people willing to pay for access without cable or in other countries with no HBO option. As I said, I respect their right to make business decisions I disagree with. I will happily go on downloading and not giving them a dime, because I am never paying for cable again.
- jaems33 14y agoIf someone respected their business decision, I would've guessed that they wouldn't download their show and instead watch or do something else.
- bgentry 14y agoI don't respect their decision, I respect their right to make a decision. I have no qualms with obtaining their content through other means if they refuse to let me pay for it.
- guard-of-terra 14y agoBut why it should be my (or parent) problem? If they can't do their job by figuring it out, why do they feel entitled to anything?
- flyinRyan 14y agoUh, what? They don't feel entitled. They're doing what they want and making money. It's those who say "well I'm just taking it then" that are being "entitled".
- guard-of-terra 14y agoNo, they aren't entitled. They just take. They are doing what they want and having entertainment. Don't you think it is symmetric? HBO is doing what they want and making money. Torrenters are doing what they want and having entertainment. So why blame people for stealing even if the owner doesn't? Who are you to blame anyone if the "victim" doesn't feel affected by "crime"? Who are you?
- flyinRyan 14y agoWhat exactly would HBO need to do to prove to you they care about copyright infringement?
- guard-of-terra 14y agoAccept my money. And money of other countless beings who watch Game of Thrones outside of USA.
- flyinRyan 14y agoI don't like how things have worked out with HBO but they apparently feel that the money they could make selling direct is dwarfed by what they make via channel partners. They are taking steps to try and protect their IP, just not the ones who want them to take. Claiming that this means they don't care about IP at all is, frankly, childish.
