I hate all of these features except the index. I get about 12kbps on mobile. There are very few sites I can view. Hackers news is one of them. The more I use the modern internet the more I want to be left alone with my thoughts. I need th website equivalent of a sensorial faraday cage.
- WolfeReader 2y agoBesides "Link Previews", which other features are affected by your bandwidth?
- aklemm 2y agoPhone might have a power button which would help you meet your goal.
- wegfawefgawefg 2y agoMy phone mostly functions as a text machine with encyclopedia attached, which I greatly enjoy. When I see unusual construction or some curiosities I do not understand, I look them up. angle-of-repose, hill reinforcement techniques, average lifespan of whale shark, salps, concrete blocks underneath vending machines, stacked wires on electric trains, staged turbos on desiel trains, those circular dimples in japanese concrete blocks, etc. This is what I have always mostly used the internet for. After reading about something like this I enjoy just stewing on the info. This is the mode of existence I enjoy the most. Only in the past few years was there much temptation for forever scrolling. Turning off my phone is good but then I cant look up interesting stuff, which is the point of being alive for me.
- paulddraper 2y agoYou get less than a quarter the speed of dialup?
- mey 2y agoSome potential reasons - Remote backhaul / Satellite / Offshore - Subsidized/cheap wireless plan - Going over data cap, some carriers fall into a "safety" mode instead of charging you extra. I pay for 8gb/mo and would get throttled to similar speeds - Preference
- superkuh 2y agoPlus all wireless transmissions of internet stuff that use TCP will experience random round trip time (rtt) leading to problematic and ever increasing TCP re-transmit delay after back-off.
- paulddraper 2y ago> Preference I don't kink shame, but slowed websites is an odd one.
- wegfawefgawefg 2y agoMy brand new OnePlus8pro was blacklisted in Japan for being under the oppo brand a couple years ago. (The system in japan works on whitelisting, its corrupt and stupid) Anyways I had a $1000 phone, and I was not about to throw it away. So I continued to use it via an American cell company, which gives me just enough internet for wikipedia. Google maps doesnt work about 70% of the time. Since then I have realized not having good internet is good for my brain. It keeps me reading gigamonkeys and downloading pdf's before I go places rather than doomscrolling twitter.
- MostlyStable 2y agoBack when I was on satellite, I wouldn't say those speeds were the norm, but they certainly weren't unusual.
- arrowsmith 2y agoWhy is your mobile speed so slow? Where do you live?
- freedomben 2y agoThis is typically my experience when driving on interstates in the western US. The speed varies enormously, but glacial speeds are very common. HN works well, most sites do not.

- gavinhoward 2y agoI actually agree with you, even though my Internet isn't as slow. Can you do me a favor and go to my website? If you do, please give me feedback about what you like and don't like. Thank you. https://gavinhoward.com/ https://gavinhoward.com/
- wegfawefgawefg 2y agoThe first page took a while to load, about 8 seconds. But the articles loaded much more quickly. A few seconds each. I am in asia so depending on where you are hosting some of this might be initial latency, which is often pretty high.
- gavinhoward 2y agoThank you! They are hosted in the States, and I can't afford a CDN, unfortunately. But I made sure to split off the CSS and other assets so they could be cached. It seems to have helped.
