VPN by Google One shuts down
- mtmail 2y agoWhen it was originally announed in April: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40571925 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40571925 , https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40010047 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40010047 , https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40027182 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40027182 - "Not shocking. Their VPN app sucked ass." - "Yeah, their client was pretty bad" - "You couldn't choose a server outside your country" - various takes and jokes that Google discontinues a lot of products
- kemotep 2y ago> You couldn't choose a server outside your country That’s like one of the top reasons people use a consumer grade VPN.
- tssva 2y agoThe Google One VPN was never meant to compete with the likes of Mullvad or PIA. It was more along the line of Cloudflare’s Warp or Apple’s Private Relay.
- surajrmal 2y agoRight, but it wasn't the feature Google was offering. They were offering privacy.
- ndriscoll 2y agoThem being the largest surveillance organization in the world makes that a bit of a tricky value prop.
- FerretFred 2y agoLOL....
- lowkey 2y agoPrivacy, just not privacy from Google, kind of like browsing in incognito.
- dudus 2y agoThe top reason in this case is not the right reason. I think it is reasonable to offer a product that only tries to tackle the security side of vpn market. For what is worth Google consumer VPN is not dead and lives on as a feature for pixel phones.
- pharos92 2y agoGoogle discontinuing a product? No.
- sfmike 2y agowasn't this the VPN that was stated as a great feature for getting a pixel that all pixel users get? It's gone already? Wasn't that with Pixel 7 only when launched?
- ulfw 2y agoI am genuinely surprised the Pixel line isn't gone yet. Frankly I didn't even expect it to come out after the Motorola disaster. Glad I can still be surprised by Google not shutting down something.
