OpenAI Co-Founder, Who Helped Oust Sam Altman, Starts His Own Company
- moralestapia 2y agoHmm whoever wrote that headline is quite insensitive or just plain ignorant. Ilya's name can stand on its own, even before joining OpenAI.
- whimsicalism 2y agothe general public only knows Sam American society nowadays celebrates the capital allocators, not the weird scientists and investors
- aipatselarom 2y agoDo they? If you stop somebody on the street and ask them who "Sam Altman" is, they wouldn't know as well ...
- whimsicalism 2y agoI think you underestimate the degree that he is becoming a household name, especially since the ScarJo thing
- aipatselarom 2y agohttps://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%203-m&geo=US&q=Sam%20Altman,Ilya%20Sutskever,Taylor%20Swift&hl=en-US https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%203-m&ge... I'd say they're on about the same degree of (low) popularity. You may argue the comparison vs. Swift is overkill, but that's actually the kind of fame that's "household name" territory.
- whimsicalism 2y agohttps://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%203-m&geo=US&q=Sam%20Altman,Ilya%20Sutskever,bill%20gates&hl=en-US https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%203-m&ge... Taylor Swift is far beyond household name level of fame, she is likely among the most recognizable names in the world if not the most recognizable name in the world right now. I use google trends quite frequently, I have yet to be able to find a name that eclipses taylor swift
- aipatselarom 2y agoYou're right on that, I went down a rabbit hole of comparing her vs. all I could think of, and she's an absolute monster. Wow. Good on her!
- dougb5 2y agoIt's not a person's name, I know, but, you could say that Wordle makes Taylor Swift look like Ilya Sutskever: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%203-m&geo=US&q=Sam%20Altman,Ilya%20Sutskever,taylor%20swift,wordle&hl=en-US https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today%203-m&ge...

- hu3 2y agoThis is a nytimes article. Not a dupe of the https://ssi.inc https://ssi.inc announcement. edit: looking at your account, about half your messages seems to be [dupe]. https://i.imgur.com/RomLfQG.png https://i.imgur.com/RomLfQG.png Are you automating this? I wouldn't recommend because of false flags like you just did. edit2: seems like i hit a nerve. got instant -3 votes for pointing out this is not a dupe.
- whimsicalism 2y agoyou don’t seem to understand how dupe works on HN :) it doesn’t have to be literally the same article - these are both describing the exact same event
- hu3 2y agoI think you're assuming your understanding of dupe as a de facto HN rule. Guidelines say nothing about that: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html And this news article has context and information which the other post lacked.
- whimsicalism 2y agoYes it’s not a de jure rule, but it is a de facto one. HN has plenty of norms not formally in the guidelines
- hu3 2y agoIt's not the same link, not the same article, they aren't even written by the same person. The content is very different in content. They only relate in topic. One is the announcement from a company. The other is a news coverage. @dang could you please clarify if this is considered a dupe? In fact while searching for references about what is considered a dupe I found a false positive by THE SAME PERSON that reported this as dupe: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40433658 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40433658 And I quote: " busymom0 30 days ago | root | parent | next [–] Related doesn't meant dupe. " ------- "snowwrestler 30 days ago | prev [–] Please stop with the [dupe] comments. No one is asking you to do it, and you’re not doing a good job of it." ------- "busymom0 30 days ago | next [–] This is not a dupe of those 2 posts you provided. This post is about the update issued by Apple yesterday (those 2 posts are from 6 days ago) and is also a more broader discussion calling for Apple to release details of the bug."

- javier123454321 2y agoCo-Founder, who helped out [other Co-Founder] ...I would hope that's the case, lol.
- tedivm 2y agoNot "helped out", it says "help oust".
- whimsicalism 2y agoreread the subject :)
- diffxx 2y ago> Dr. Sutskever’s title at the new company will be chief scientist but he describes his role, according to Ms. Meservey, as “responsible for revolutionary breakthroughs.” My word that is an impressive level of self-confidence.
