This reminds me of an anecdote from someone who worked for a large hotel(?) chain. I can't remember where I read it. Anyway, they wrote a program that analyzed employee activity from sources including badge readers and automatically shut off lights when no one was around. Management loved it — because it, inadvertently, allowed them to surveil employees.
