How is $2,500 not a reasonable expense for a small business?
- BenjiWiebe 2y ago$2,500 is a lot of money. 50 hours at $50/hour. Plenty (most?) small business owners aren't making $50 per hour.
- practicemaths 2y agoIs this a one time expense or continuously yearly? The pricing description in the article wasn't making that clear to me. Regardless, $2500 is more than reasonable write off expense for startup costs in almost any sector a "small-business" may operate in. 100k is more than a believable amount of revenue for a small business to have.
- Suppafly 2y agoThe problem is that many people hear small business and assume it's like 1-10 employees, but really small business is anything up to ~500 employees and millions in revenue.
- sealeck 2y agoIt's a lot more servers than a business would need?
- practicemaths 2y ago"Pricing starts at a reasonable $25 per server/instance per year, with a minimum $2,500 investment required." So is it 100 server minimum or is it $2,500 upfront plus $25 per year after that for a single server/instance?
- adamomada 2y agoRight now it’s $2500/year unless you have more than 100 servers, each server thereafter would be $25 on top of $2500. It’s most likely because the costs of doing any business with other businesses isn’t worth it with a $25 minimum. I hope they get some feedback and reduce the minimum, but I completely understand the rationale.
- wpm 2y agoBecause it’s 100x more than what a small business probably needs (one server instance per year)? Why pay $2500 for a lot of things you don’t need to get access to one when you could just pay for the one for $25?
- practicemaths 2y agoAre you saying that $2500 is an unreasonable amount for a small business to invest in itself or let alone within startup costs? If I started a tow-truck company, that would be a small business. I would also expect to invest more than $2500 into my tow-truck. I trust a tangible analogy should be sufficient to get my point across.
- gabrielgio 2y ago> Are you saying that $2500 is an unreasonable amount for a small business to invest in itself or let alone within startup costs? No, he is saying that is too much money to spend on something you don’t need.
- practicemaths 2y agoA price conscious consumer will not purchase this then. I am confused at what the issue here is then. The business presumably set their price for their target audience. If that price is too high then you are not the target audience.
- gabrielgio 2y ago> Why does it always seem like the tech industry hates small businesses? They is venting/complaining about SUSE not caring about small companies. That is it.
- donmcronald 2y agoIt's not just SUSE. It's almost everyone in the industry. No one wants to talk to you unless you can spend $5-10k per year and that just doesn't work for small owner operated businesses. The thing people don't realize is that it's not just one company like SUSE that won't sell you anything unless you can spend $2500 / year, it's everyone with their hand out asking for a few thousand dollars. There are several places where I could justify $100 to keep a single Linux VM running for a year, but $2500 is never going to happen. I don't expect anyone to provide support, but why not sell me access for one machine for $100? I think the article is more like "SUSE Offers Lifeline to CentOS Users with 100+ Servers".
