I feel like it's more a trend towards boring, sterile, inoffensive and cheap rather than taking pride in making things as well as you can. In modern society, everything is commoditized and mass-produced as cheaply as possible, instead of someone going out on a limb making choices that some may not prefer. Everything is decided by committee.
