This is very disappointing and feels like the riot act does apply.
May not be as short notice as it could be for EOL at the end of the month, looks like there hasn't been a previous announcement since 2020.
But this is Fermilab:
>State-of-the-art computing facilities and expertise drive successful research in experimental and theoretical particle physics. Fermilab is a pioneer in managing "big data" and counts scientific computing as one of its core competencies.
And they can't continue to maintain their own Linux distribution as successfully as they have been after all they went through to get it going?
>Fermilab has an impressive capacity for storing data over the long term. The laboratory can store about 500 petabytes of data in total, which represents about 20 times the amount stored by all the LHC experiments in a year.
>Hosting computing hardware is necessary but not sufficient to guarantee success. Fermilab also employs a team of computer science experts and particle physicists who specialize in computational techniques. They work to make these resources productive so the broader scientific community can concentrate on the science.
You can't get much broader than individual PC's.
You think maybe their compile times were too lengthy or systemd got too confusing and they had to give up?
This could be a defect like purely academic labs have where people graduate and incredibly promising efforts lose momentum afterward. Quite a serious disadvantage to run a company like that but a national lab should be so much different than academic bureaucracy too, with even more continuity than a corporation. When a person with an advanced degree or specialty gets hired it should be like night and day they have left the academic world behind, never to look back. You don't do this with any intention of a possibly temporary project like you would in college, it's supposed to be for real and for good because you've reached the big time.
Too bad that lack of vision or commitment prevails when something else is needed more than ever, but usually already too late anyway.
Don't let a pseudo-academic environment limit your ultimate potential.
