Maybe my extended family don't live in the same time zone. Maybe friends and family can't use a phone because they are too busy working two jobs. Maybe I have so many friends and family it would be literally impossible to find time to keep in contact. Facebook makes "keeping in touch" asynchronous. THAT is the reason for its success.
