Is aesthetic sense cultural? I have visited and lived in many different countries. In some places, people appear to have no aesthetic sense i.e. live among junk. In other places, everyone really made an effort to keep things beautiful.
- Gibbon1 2y agoI think the rot tends to be systemic. Even if you want something nice the local construction ecosystem might fight you every step of the way. Building material suppliers don't stock or produce nice stuff, only shitty. Workers have no experience with nice, only fast, cheap, and shoddy. Code and permitting are suspicious about anything 'different'. If your building stands out someones going to not like it no matter what it is.
- brokenmachine 2y agoI feel like it's more a trend towards boring, sterile, inoffensive and cheap rather than taking pride in making things as well as you can. In modern society, everything is commoditized and mass-produced as cheaply as possible, instead of someone going out on a limb making choices that some may not prefer. Everything is decided by committee.
