The Banishment of Beauty from Everyday Life
- paulryanrogers 2y agoSome find irreparably thin devices beautiful. Too each their own ... until it becomes impossible to repair anything because of vain navel gazers.
- richrichie 2y agoIs aesthetic sense cultural? I have visited and lived in many different countries. In some places, people appear to have no aesthetic sense i.e. live among junk. In other places, everyone really made an effort to keep things beautiful.
- Gibbon1 2y agoI think the rot tends to be systemic. Even if you want something nice the local construction ecosystem might fight you every step of the way. Building material suppliers don't stock or produce nice stuff, only shitty. Workers have no experience with nice, only fast, cheap, and shoddy. Code and permitting are suspicious about anything 'different'. If your building stands out someones going to not like it no matter what it is.
- brokenmachine 2y agoI feel like it's more a trend towards boring, sterile, inoffensive and cheap rather than taking pride in making things as well as you can. In modern society, everything is commoditized and mass-produced as cheaply as possible, instead of someone going out on a limb making choices that some may not prefer. Everything is decided by committee.
- marcus_holmes 2y agoSame with architecture. Hundred-year-old buildings have aesthetic touches. Modern buildings tend to be efficient concrete or glass cubes.
- ilrwbwrkhv 2y agoOh tell me about it. Even in software from the introduction of flat design, everything has been reduced to white space and nothingness. This is actually a great conspiracy of low skilled designers around the world who joined companies when this trend first started and now they outnumber the high skill designers and will not let this system go. Look at some of the mac app icons of the past. Beautiful, highly skilled work.
- brokenmachine 2y agoInteresting article but paywalled
- sneed_chucker 2y agoYeah ok, but I'm not paying money for more paragraphs of this guy going on and on about "vgh, things vsed to have sovl"
