House passes defense bill automatically registering men ages 18-26 for draft
- cranberryturkey 2y agoWhat’s mdraft?
- cranberryturkey 2y ago> The selective service is already mandatory for male U.S. citizens aged 18 to 24 big nothing burger OP.
- cempaka 2y agoI actually didn't know this, when I was that age it was just required for so many interactions one might have with the federal government that it was essentially mandatory, but it was still avoidable to those with significant resources. When things really kick off with China maybe we'll round up all our young men with press gangs like they're doing in Ukraine now.
- jfengel 2y agoThe US has no interest in actually invoking a draft. Our military has no use for mere cannon fodder. Even the most basic infantryman has to master a lot of skills. A bunch of draftees is worse than useless. And that's especially true if "things really kick off with China", since that will go nuclear almost instantly. There's little point to this bill, except to acknowledge that our wildly outdated notion of a draft also has wildly outdated technology. We haven't actually needed to make people sign themselves up for decades. That information is readily available and it can be done automatically. Not that it needs to be done at all. We should eliminate it entirely. Or, if they insist on keeping it, to update it to include women -- another wildly outdated aspect of our 19th-century draft system.
