If you install a new operating system, you erase EVERYTHING on your computer.
No you don't. But you MIGHT, by accident or intent. So back up everything first anyway. In fact back up everything daily anyway, anyway. It's a good standard practice.
There are two types of people in the world: Those who have lost files because of not having good backups. And those who have not yet lost files due to not having good backups. Try to stay out of Group 1 as long as possible.
