The US presents itself as the “city on a hill”, a shining beacon of democracy and freedom for the world to look up to as an example. This should, ostensibly, mean supporting democratic processes even when they yield outcomes that are not necessarily optimal for American interests. It’s clear that this isn’t the case. If your main motivator is your own personal benefit, and you’re not shy about using realpolitik, deception, and violence to achieve it, at least be open about that fact. Attempts to disguise it as a moral and ethical position are shallow and easily identified.
