Apple Intelligence Won’t Work on Hundreds of Millions of iPhones
- Veliladon 2y agoIt's RAM. It's absolutely RAM. 3 billion parameters @ 3.5bpp quantization is 1.31GB. And since iOS has no swap it has to be resident in memory alongside everything else the device is running. iPhone 14 Pro only has 6GB of RAM, iPhone 15 Pro has 8GB.
- astrange 2y agoIt's never just one thing but it's partly RAM. They said why somewhere in this interview: https://youtu.be/J7al_Gpolb8 https://youtu.be/J7al_Gpolb8 I like that the article calls the ANE the "Apple Apple Neural Engine".
- BugsJustFindMe 2y ago> I like that the article calls the ANE the "Apple Apple Neural Engine". Even better, they say "Apple introduced the..." I'm pretty sure that makes it Apple's Apple Apple Neural Engine.
- halJordan 2y agoI'm honestly surprised at this reaction. I was hoodwinked by the constant repetition of all the commentators bleating that they were happy with their iphone X. That an iphone from three generations ago was perfect, and even one from the last generation was overkill. Now it's hefty intimations of "Apple's betrayed me" and "Why doesn't my old phone get this cool new feature?" A little consistency from the peanut gallery, please. The internet has been begging to sleep in the bed they've made but now that its bedtime don't nobody want to crawl in.
- thejazzman 2y agoI don't think there are very many people disappointed about AI not running on their phone When I even suggest my extended family that they even try ChatGPT and see how it can help them it becomes immediately clear that I am a super ultra mega nerd and they barely even humor hearing about it. They all continue to buy iPhones.
- jarbus 2y agoIt’s an absolute joke that apples slogan for this is “AI for the rest of us” when it’s literally only going on their most expensive phone
- Kirby64 2y agoI don’t understand the hysterics about “it makes old phones obsolete”. Plenty of features are only available on newer phones. This comes to every single iPad Pro and MacBook since 2021, and last years pro phones. If this was only coming to stuff released this year (eg iPhone 16 and m4 chips) then there’d be valid criticism… but it sure feels like they’re being pretty generous with the backwards compatibility.
